About Us

Mission

Zero Waste South Windsor (ZWSW) is a grassroot initiative designed to significantly reduce the volume of waste materials discarded into our lakes, oceans, landfills and other destinations sourced from residents of South Windsor. We aspire to establish South Windsor as a leader in “green” initiatives and a model for other towns in Connecticut and across America.

Steps we are taking

  1. Under the direction of Mayor Saud Anwar and Deputy Mayor Andrew Paterna, a task force has been assembled to establish priorities, generate awareness, recruit volunteers and develop local events designed to underscore the mission
  2. The task force has identified the reduction of single-use plastic bags as an area of focus for kick-off events. Our communication plan addresses this with merchants and retailers as well as town residents. We will implement a variety of marketing, public relations and grassroots activities designed to drive awareness and enthusiastic acceptance of the goal of reducing single-use plastic bags.
  3. Students at Timothy Edwards Middle School and South Windsor High School have volunteered to take the lead in organizing various school activities that get other students energized and participating.
  4. Our kick-off event on Saturday, June 30th and Sunday July 1st at Geissler’s Supermarket was a success! We handed out T-shirts and reusable eco-friendly shopping bags to customers. Check out all those who pledged to use reusable bags!
  5. We have a goal of a quantified reduction in waste by next Earth Day – April 22, 2019
